Simple Ways To Add More Fruit and Veg To Your Diet

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet is really important for so many reasons. They are packed full of nutrients, which give your body what it needs to function properly, from your immune system to bone health and everything in between.

From adding a few bits of fruit to your breakfast to meal prepping and a new way to make your sauces, you will feel so much better when you have added extra fruits and veggies to your diet.

Eat Fruit With Breakfast

The first thing you can do to add more fruit and veg to your diet is to add it to your breakfast. Eating fruit at breakfast will give you a wonderful boost at the start of the day and you will know you’ve already had a big dose before your day has really begun.

If you have porridge or cereal for breakfast, add some fresh berries or bananas. You could even add frozen fruit during the cooking process, which gives a lovely taste. For those of you who like savoury breakfasts, have a small bowl of fruit on the side or some fresh fruit juice. Or, you could add different vegetables to your omelettes or eggs for a colourful twist.

You can really get creative here and you will feel great when you know you’ve had a good portion of fruit and veg!

Make Smoothies!

Another great way to eat more fruits and veggies is to make smoothies! The great thing about smoothies is literally anyone can make them. Simply fill up your smoothie cup half way with your choice of fruit and veg (any berries, mango, pineapple, kiwis, avocado, kale, spinach, banana and so much more), then cover the fruit and veg with fruit juice and a bit of water. Add chia seeds or hemp seeds for an added health boost and then blend until smooth!

With smoothies, you can freeze any fruit that is nearly going out of date and just add it in. So, you don’t always need to worry about having fresh fruit and veg in the fridge. Experiment with different fruits, veg and fruit juices until you find your favourite combinations! Some people are really put off by the idea of green smoothies, but you really won’t be able to taste it when you just add a few spinach or kale leaves.

If you don’t like just eating fruit and veg, blending and drinking it is a great alternative that also tastes amazing.

Try New Soups

Whilst on the topic of liquid fruit and veg, we’ve also got soup! For people who prefer savoury foods but don’t necessarily like eating veg on their own, soups are a nutritious and heart warming option.

You can add anything and everything you want, then cover everything with stock and add your spices. Try spiced parsnip soup, winter vegetables, tomato and basil, butternut squash and red pepper, there are so many options out there that you can try to find your favourite soup recipes. You can also add things like beans or lentils for extra protein, so you stay nice and full. With lentils, you can blend them in completely and you won’t even know they’ve been added.

Like with smoothies, you can freeze leftover fruit and veg then add them to your soup when you get a chance to cook some. You can batch make soup as well and then eat it throughout the week, so you have healthy lunches prepped and ready to go!

Meal Prep At The Weekend

Another thing you can do to make sure you are eating enough fruit and veg throughout the week is to meal prep over the weekend. Start by planning what you want to eat for the whole week for breakfast, lunch and dinner (this actually won’t take very long), making sure that you are eating a wide variety of fruit and veg. Different coloured fruit and veg tend to contain different nutrients, so aim for a colourful mixture when planning!

Then, write a shopping list and head to the shops and get everything you need. Spend a couple of hours batch making meals for the first few days of the week, or the full week and freeze your meals that you’ll be eating towards the end of the week. This is such a great way to get organised and make sure your diet is balanced. This can be quite time consuming, but it’s worth it. If you are really short on time, there are also prepared meal delivery services that will deliver them ready to your door. Plus, when you choose the right company, they will all be nutritionally balanced with lots of varieties of fruit and veg!

Either meal prepping yourself, or investing in a meal prep company, is a great way to eat more fruit and veg!

Final Thoughts

If you aren’t a big fan of fruit and vegetables, or struggle to know how to incorporate them into your diet, then these tips will be great for you. You will hardly even notice that you are eating more fruit and vegetables, and if it is obvious, it will taste very delicious!
