5 Creative Recipes That Elevate an Average Steak

Steak is a dinnertime favorite because of its rich flavor and protein content. While some purists only use salt and pepper on their meat, you have a world of choices to level things up. 

How can you upgrade your steak? Try these five creative recipes. 

1. Sesame Steak Stir Fry

This sesame steak stir fry is a healthy meal option with plenty of vegetables. Plus, the steak provides natural creatine, making it an excellent dinner any night. 

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces thinly sliced top round steak
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • ½ head cabbage cut into strips
  • ½ cucumber quartered
  • 2 bunches scallions
  • 2 red jalapeños seeded and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon minced and peeled ginger
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch 
  • 3 cups cooked white rice

Directions: 

  1. Combine 2 teaspoons of sesame oil and 2 teaspoons of water with the soy sauce, cornstarch and brown sugar. Add the steak and let it marinate while you prepare the vegetables. 
  1. Preheat a skillet over high heat and add 2 teaspoons of sesame oil. Cook the cabbage, cucumber and scallions for about two minutes, then add the shredded carrots with ¼ cup of water. Cook for a few more minutes until the vegetables are tender. 
  1. Remove the vegetables and add 2 teaspoons of sesame oil. Cook the ginger and jalapeños for about 30 seconds before adding the steak. Let the meat cook for about three minutes or until browned. 
  1. Once the steak has browned, add the marinade to the skillet and let it thicken. Reincorporate the vegetables and mix everything. Serve over rice. 

2. Three-Pepper Pomegranate Skirt Steak

This three-pepper pomegranate skirt steak recipe needs less than eight or 10 minutes to cook after you’ve marinated the meat. 

Ingredients:

  • 2 (1 to 1 1/4 lb.) skirt steaks
  • 2 peeled and thinly sliced large shallots
  • ½ cup pomegranate juice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 teaspoons whole black peppercorns
  • 2 teaspoons whole green peppercorns
  • 2 teaspoons coarse salt
  • ½ teaspoon Thai chili paste
  • Cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Crush all the peppercorns with the salt to form a powder. 
  1. Combine the pomegranate juice, olive oil, shallots, molasses and chili paste. Incorporate the crushed peppercorns. 
  1. Pour the marinade over your skirt steaks in a shallow dish. Let the steak marinate for at least two hours. 
  1. Preheat your grill and spray the racks with cooking spray. 
  1. Pat the steaks dry and let them rest at room temperature for 15 minutes. 

Grill the steaks for about two to four minutes on each side, depending on your preference for their doneness. Let the steaks rest for five minutes before slicing. 

3. Easy Steak Sandwich

This easy steak sandwich recipe takes your meal to the next level with tasty peppers and vegetables. 

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 pounds well-marbled steak
  • 4 mushrooms sliced
  • ¼ onion sliced
  • ¼ bell pepper sliced
  • 3 tablespoons chopped pickled peppers
  • 2 tablespoons butter divided
  • 1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • salt and pepper
  • ⅓ baguette
  • 2 slices of cheddar cheese

Directions:

  1. Set a skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Cook the onions for a couple of minutes before adding the mushrooms. Once soft, add the bell pepper slices and cook for three more minutes. Remove all the vegetables. 
  1. Add the remaining tablespoon butter, the steak and the pickled hot peppers. Season with salt and pepper to taste and incorporate the hot pepper sauce. Cook for two to three minutes before adding the vegetables to the pan. 
  1. Turn off the heat. Add cheese slices over the mixture and let them melt. 
  1. Transfer the steak, cheese and vegetable mixture to your bread and serve. 

4. Gochujang Minute Steak Skewers With Charred Broccolini

Use this gochujang minute skewers recipe with charred broccolini and lime for a fun party meal. 

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds steak cut into strips
  • 2 bunches broccolini
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ¼ cup gochujang 
  • Juice of one lime
  • Kimchi for serving

Directions: 

  1. Preheat your grill to high heat. 
  1. Mix 1 tablespoon sesame oil with soy sauce, gochujang and garlic. Incorporate the steak and coat the meat well. Move the steak strips to 12 skewers. 
  1. Cook the skewers on each side for one or two minutes with the grill lid closed. 
  1. Remove the steak skewers and wrap them loosely in foil. Let them rest for about five minutes. 
  1. Grill the broccolini for three to four minutes or until it starts charring. Once done, add the broccolini to a bowl and cover it with sesame seeds, 1 tablespoon sesame oil and lime juice. 
  1. Serve the steak skewers with the broccolini and kimchi on the side. 

5. Carne Asada Tacos

If you want bursts of flavor, try these carne asada tacos for an unforgettable meal.

Marinade ingredients:

  • 2 pounds skirt steak
  • 2 green onions diced
  • 4 garlic cloves smashed
  • ½ cup lime juice
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin 
  • 2 teaspoons ground paprika

Taco ingredients:

  • Flour tortillas
  • Diced cilantro
  • Diced white onion
  • Guacamole and lime for garnish

Directions:

  1. Mix the lime juice, salt, coriander, cumin, olive oil, red wine vinegar, green onions and garlic in a large dish. Add the skirt steak and evenly coat the meat. Marinate for at least four hours before cooking. 
  1. Preheat the grill to high heat. Remove your steak and pat the meat dry. 
  1. Lubricate the grill with oil or spray, and place the steak on the grates. Cook each side for about four minutes per side with the lid closed. 
  1. Remove the steak and let it rest for 10 minutes before cutting it. 
  1. Assemble each taco with your toppings.
